Wat Chalerm Phrakiat which was built by King Rama III to commemorate his mother, who once lived in the area is a large and impressive temple lying on the banks of the Chaophraya River north of Bangkok. The temple was built within an old fortification in the seventeenth century. The outer wall, in particular the side facing the river, still resembles a fortress. Classic Thailand tour
With its beautiful garden, the temple is a delightful haven of greenery which makes a pleasant change from the busy daily life of the capital. The temple is striking for its Chinese-influenced decor of landscapes and dragons. It has a Chinese-style ceramic corrugated roof, embellished with colorful porcelain in Pud-Tan leaves and flowers (or cotton rose) patterns. Chofa (the gable), and Bai Raka (toothlike ridges on the sloping edge of the gable) were adorned with various porcelain designs from China.
With a similar architectural design to other temples, a large ordination hall flanked by two smaller prayer halls are included in the Wat Chalerm Phrakiat’s campus. Surrounding the temple are a brightly decorated roof and white porcelain columns. The walls of the ordination hall are covered with pictures of the royal family during their many visits to the temple. In the centerpiece of the hall situated an impressive Buddha shrine. The biggest attraction is the temple’s biggest Buddha image made of bronze. It is enshrined in the ubosot. It is referred to as Phraphuttamahalokaphinanthaptima. Many beautiful mural paintings lay inside the main shrine hall.
On the outside, beautiful porcelain stucco designs were made in its gables, door and window frames. The large ordination hall is flanked with two smaller prayer halls. The doors and window shutters are decorated with rather simple but elegant designs on black lacquer. King Rama III was born in the year of the rabbit, so the shutters are decorated with rabbits.
Although relatively new, the park already has good shady places to rest and watch the scenery. Several beautiful buildings dot the park. The administration offices and service staff are both housed in very traditional Thai styled houses raised on poles. Near the center of the park, a sort of gazebo with a towering gilded spire sits in a lake, while on the river bank are a set of small pavilions more traditional in style.
