Tham Khoun Ex is the amazing destination for adventure lovers: river, evergreen forests within a grand cave
Tham Khoun Ex, or Xe Bang Fai, is one of the greatest river cave complex in the world, locates in the central part of Laos. This complex was discovered by Paul Macey, a French explorer in 1905 and was announced to public once again in 1995. This cave was reported to be one of the greatest river cave in the world with huge caves of 120 meters high and 200 meters wide and to have magnificent geological structure. Indochina tours Laos
Before the exploration of the foreigners, this river cave was exploited by local people to do fishery and canary raising on the downstream of the inner river. In 2005, this fantastic spot finally became a tourism site, where tourists can go explore inside the cave by kayaks. Since then, it attracted a lot of explorers from France and North America and after the journey of National Geographic in 2008, this place became world-wide famous.
The grand cave welcomes tourists with a dome gate of 60 meters high, guides you gradually inside in a river of 76 to 100 meters wide and over 50 meters high. As you go more and more inside of the cave, you will find yourself more and more amazed by what Creator has made in this heritage: 20-meter-long stalagmites and stalactite with various shapes and colors will make your exploration so unforgettable. The green color of the forest is in contrast with white and orange colors of the terraces creates a unique colorful delicate plates on the limestone walls. This cave possess different gaps and collapsed parts, these are where natural light comes in and adds more magnificence for the place.
Apart from going on kayaks, tourists can discover some parts of the cave on foot because there are some dry places in the dry season from November to April. This is also the ideal time for exploring this landscape, however, if tourists choose to go kayak from Pak Pha Nang, it will be fine to go anytime of the year.
