Koh Surin National Park is situated in the Andaman sea approximately 60 kilometers from the coast of Phang Nga Province in the southern peninsula region. The park covers an area of approximately 135 square kilometers. The park comprises 5 main islands: Ko Surin Nua, Ko Surin Tai, Ko Ree, Ko Pachumba, and Ko Kai.
This group of five islands close to the marine boundary between Burma and Thailand in Khuraburi has so far been little visited because of its distance from the coast and the absence of any commercial activity or permanent population other than Sea Gypsies on the islands, all of which are a protected area. The shallow channel between the two principal islands – about two meters at high tide-has one of the most remarkable panoplies of coral reef life to be found anywhere. Indochina travel
Koh Surin National Park is a paradise of fine white sandy beaches, thick jungle, crystal-clear waters, and the most extensive coral reef in Thailand. It is also home of the Moken Sea Nomads. The park is the ideal place to go for people wanting to connect with nature in its most beautiful and pristine form, escaping traditional touristy beaches with their bars, noise, and crowds. One advantage of Koh Surin is that you do not need to SCUBA dive to discover some of Thailand’s most extensive marine diversity. The shallow reefs are perfect for snorkeling and bursting with vibrant fish and colorful corals, even for those who are not confident in the water.
Sea turtle still nest on the Surin islands, with two species coming ashore to lay their eggs: Hawksbill and Green turtles. If you are lucky enough to see one, please do not feed or touch them. You are not allowed on some beaches — this is for a good reason, people walking on the sand damage eggs. Koh Surin is the best place in Thailand for anyone who want to swim with sea turtles. Most visitors have a few chances to get close to them, mostly hawksbill turtle.
The five hilly isles are covered in evergreen forest populated by monkeys, birds, giant crabs and monitor lizards, while the surrounding coral reefs are amongst the best in Thailand with regular sightings of turtles and reef sharks. Visitors can join twice daily long-tail boat snorkeling trips to the reefs. Most coral reefs alrle “fringing reefs”, and it can be easily observed that these reefs are located along shoreline connected to a beach. The reef is divided into 3 areas, which are Reef Flat, Reef Edge, and Reef Slope.
Basic but excellent seafood is served in just two park restaurants and electricity stops at 10pm, leaving one in awe of star-strewn skies and a jungle soundtrack.
With beautiful beach, thick jungles and stunning coral reefs, Koh Surin National Park is a peaceful paradise and a must – visit destination on your trip to Thailand.
