Entering Laos via Chiang Mai
You can take a bus to the Houay Xai on the Lao border and the Laos and Thai border towns of Chiang Khong from Chiang Mai. Over the new Mekong Bridge, this border crossing links farther by road to the Laos Mekong side’s Houay Xay. This route gives you access to great tours and cruises overland to Muang Sing and Luang Namtha into northern Laos or on the Mekong to Luang Prabang. With overnight buses which run the route to Nan province in east Thailand before crossing the border to Laos near Hong Sa is an alternative Route by bus to Luang Prabang from Chiang Mai. Traveling from Thailand into Southern Laos

You will have to access Laos via Ubon Ratchanthani in Thailand and travel on to Chong Mek – the border town if you want to travel into southern Laos. Through this border town, you will be brought to the southern Lao town of Pakse. To travel to here, you can get on one of some regular buses. Udon Ratchathani also owns an airport easily connecting to Bangkok as well as some other famous international tourist destinations. It takes just about one hour from Ubon Ratchanthani to the Lao/Thai border in Southern Laos.
