The traditional long distance bus terminal for Huay Xay (Bokeo) is Keo Champa Bus Station which is located about 5 km south of central Huay Xay. You probably need to catch a songtaew bus or tuk-tuk to get out there which may cost you about 25,000 kip because there is no regular public transit service that has routes in Huay Xay. Buses usually leave on time and don’t cancel. It takes about 3.5 hours to Luang Namtha, 7 hours to Oudom Xay and 12 hours to Luang Prabang. The bus at 12: 30 to Luang Namtha also sometimes continues on to Oudom Xay.

Huay Xai (Bokeo-Laos)           to Chiang Mai Buses (PLS) – Buses from the Phetaloun Bus Station in Bokeo Province  on the Lao side of the bridge go directly to Bus Terminal 2 in Chiang Rai for 60,000 kip (225 baht) and the trip takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. You can also take the bus at the shuttle bus desk on the Lao side of the bridge after clearing Laos Immigration. The bus drives you over the bridge, waits for passengers to free Thai immigration and then continues to Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai. Twice a day daily – at 09:00 & 16:30 (in January 2017), buses are scheduled to leave from the Phetaloun Bus Station in Huay Xai add about 20 minutes to these times for departure from Laos Immigration at the bridge. This bus service is a effective way to get heavy baggage or a small bicycle between the 2 countries as you can put your bicycle on the bus as your cargo.

Three popular ways from Huay xai to Chiang Mais

The first one, by van is popular for tourist, start from the town at 8:30 am and 4 pm to Thai border and Lao border, the van starts at the Thai-side 2 times at 5:30 am and 10: 30 am , the ticket costs  85,000 to 100,000 kip. This price includes  shuttle bus ticket and TukTuk

If you take a Tuk Tuk by yourself to the border of Huay Xai, it costs 12,000 – 25,000 kip.

The second one, by bus starts from the town at 8:30 am to Lao border and Thai border, the Thai agency will pick you up there 2 times:

The first time departure from the bus station at 9:45am, it takes 5 hours. The VIP ticket costs 415 baht, you can sit its main sit in the fort and big sit. The ticket costs only 290 baht for normal sit.

The second time departure from the bus station at 10:30 am, it takes 7 hours. The ticket costs 100,000 – 150,000 kip. This price is including TukTuk, shuttle bus ticket and pick you up.

The last one, take a TukTuk to Lao border and cross the friendship bridge, then take the TukTuk to the red bus, the red bus takes 2:30 hour to Chiang Rai. It cost 65 baht. They drop you at the city bus station. From Chiang Rai, you take Greenbus – Thailand which costs 6$-9$ and hourly scheduled. It takes 3 hours from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai.

The journey by bus is not easy to take, but it will not cost you too much, so you will have much more money to spend on exploring Chiang Mai- Thailand. The bus also goes through many beautiful scenes so remember to bring your camera along to save all.
