Named after the Buddha’s birth place in Nepal, historically, the park dates back to the 1920s when it was established to be an exhibition centre for flower displays and Thai crafts. Although this original goal was never complete, Lumpini Park has many the years grown into the lovely centre for outdoor leisure activities for Bangkokians, who would assemble before and after sunset to do a round of jogging, aerobics as well as many other recreational activities.

Lounging on the spongy Bermuda grass or stepping along the paved walkways or stop at one of the bridges to feed the fish are a wide range of activities what the Lumphini Park offers. Just with a copy of your passport and a comparative fee at 40 baht bags you will be a membership all year long of a modern air-con fitness centre, outdoor lap pool and tennis/badminton courts, which is one of the best conveniences when you live in the area.

Plenty of free activities are offered here such as taking part in the race with the hundreds of runners who spend their time each evening around sunset to jog laps around the park’s flat 2.5 kilometer ring. There are several vendors selling water and snacks throughout the park making it easy for you to satisfy your thirst.

If running is too difficult for you, joining in one of several fitness dance groups who exercise fast-paced Thai and Western dance music each evening around dusk is not a bad idea. If wanting to work on your knees stopping by one of two outdoor weight gyms and ask any Bangkok’s friendly muscle bound lifters for a spot is what you need to do.

If something more competitive, testing your skills in a match of tha kor (kick volleyball) is surely what you want to do. Near the tha kor court in Lumpini’s northern reaches can be found a well maintained full basketball court where a rather competitive five-on-five game in the early evening hours or come in the morning takes place.
